Ode to Buttercup
Today I am saddened by the death of Gerald B. (Buttercup) Hill. Gerald was comedian and musician in the group Dallas Bond and the Musical Farmers, a group my father led, that made appearances around the area for many years and broadcast from Cambridge's new station at the time, WILE. Gerald is the last of the original group to pass. The Musical Farmers are now a cherished memory for me.

Gerald's late wife, Wanda, was my cousin and grew up in an earlier generation in the place I called home as a child. She often helped my mother and they were good friends. Wanda liked to remind me that she changed my diaper as a baby.

One time Mom and Wanda were riding in the old '38 Chevy, our car, and I remember them saying that both of them would soon be 29 years old. That actually scared me for 29 seemed so old to an 8 year old. They turned out to live much longer.

I remember riding in the back seat of the car under Buttercup's bass fiddle as we traveled to a place to perform. It wasn't the most comfortable there and I remember complaining about how much longer it would be until we got "there."

Gerald did some funny things on stage. He had a pretend horse that he rode on stage and had quite funny dialogues. I do remember one about "beans" that always made people laugh. He sang songs such as "Alimony Trouble", "I'm My Own Grandpa" and many more. He always brought the audience to a roar.

Gerald played the mandolin and did a fine job on what he called "The Sixth Street Rag" (half of "The Twelfth Street Rag"). He did a superb job on the song "Silver Bells." Much of the time he would be providing the rhythm and bass sounds behind the group. He was quite an entertainer.

Gerald didn't just perform with the Musical Farmers. In later years he was a part of many groups. I know that he sang barbershop so well. He provided a good bass part.

People might remember Gerald as a car salesman for that is what he did many years of his life. I remember him as parts man behind the counter at our business. He was just a part of what I remember as "family." Thus, I am quite saddened to see that era completely gone.
His son Jerry grew up with us and Lois Louise (as Wanda fondly referred to her) was the apple of everyone's eye. Such a cute little gal! Later in life, Craig was a member of a fifth or sixth grade class that I taught in Senecaville.
Gerald and Wanda attended the Musical Farmer reunions that were held here at our home in the early 90's. Oh, am I glad that we held those reunions. It is hard to believe that most of the people that attended them have now gone on to their rewards. Steve, Daddy, Mom, Leonard, Shorty and now Gerald. God bless them all!
